Improving agricultural teacher training in Indonesia

15-10-2019

For the project “LMSINDO: Link and Match SMK in Indonesia Project Director Huub Mudde and Project Consultant Gigi Limpens were present for the start-up of the project where they met all the Indonesian partners at Polbangtan in Bogor, Indonesia.

The project aims to strengthen SMK teacher training (in- and pre-service) on national and on regional level by enhancing the educational and organizational capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture Polbangtan system and SMKs. In particular, there is also a focus on strengthening teacher training in TVET Agriculture in the province Nusa Tenggara Timor (NTT, East-Nusa Tenggara). Furthermore, assisting SMK-PP Kupang to upgrade to the status of agricultural polytechnic, and strengthening linkages (Link and Match) by establishing collaborative frameworks between education, government and private sector (triple helix) on national and provincial level is very important. The project will strengthen the overall agriculture teacher training further by bringing the Ministry of Agriculture into the project framework, creating robust and seamless coordination to prepare scaling up process.

The first meeting at Polbangtan was attended by Politeknik Pembangungan Pertanian, the two pilot vocational education institutions (SMK-PP Kupang and SMK Waibakul), the regional agricultural training centre of the Ministry of Agriculture (BBPP Kupang), the Vocational School of IPB University (SV-IPB), and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN). The Indonesian partner University of Nusa Cendana (UNDANA) was absent.

Immediately after the start-up meeting, Huub Mudde paid a visit to the two pilot vocational education institutions (SMK-PP Kupang and SMK Waibajul) where he met staff and students. These two SMKs are senior high schools that offer agricultural education to teenagers in the age of 16 until 18. During this visit the two institutions highly welcomed the project, as it is the first international project they participate in. They also expressed their expectations, mainly stressing the need for improving facilities for practical training.

In the upcoming two months MSM together with the team of Polbangtan will perform the baseline study and develop the action plan for 2020. It was agreed upon to have the official kick-off in Bogor, Indonesia on Tuesday December 17, followed by two days of training.

The visit was concluded with a meeting at the regional agricultural training centre of the Ministry of Agriculture (BBPP Kupang). They offered their support in the implementation of the project and opened up their facilities and experts for training.

The project will run until 31 December 2021 and will be directed by Huub Mudde, Senior Project Consultant at MSM.
